THE MYSTERY OF MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE-WHAT IS THE BEST COVERAGE IF YOU RIDE A MOTORCYCLE AND HOW TO ASK FOR IT
If you own a motorcycle in the state of Kansas, you are required to have insurance on that vehicle. Unfortunately, the amount of insurance that is required by law is quite minimal and can leave you in a situation where you are underinsured quite quickly. Many motorcycle accidents result in severe injuries to the motorcycle rider because the motorcyclist is usually less protected than the driver of the automobile causing the accident. Therefore, you need to be sure that you have plenty of insurance coverage on your automobile. This will require that you be educated about what to ask your insurance agent in order to get adequate motorcycle insurance coverage.
The first and most important motorcycle insurance coverage is the liability/underinsured uninsured benefit. The minimum required under Kansas law is $25,000 per person. If you have serious injuries in an accident, your medical bills will almost always exceed this value. Therefore, you need to ask that your agent provide you with the highest possible bodily injury liability coverage that you can afford. You will be surprised at how cheap it is to obtain this liability coverage for even the $500,000 amount, and some people will go so far as to purchase a $1,000,000 worth of liability insurance coverage. When you purchase this bodily injury amount to protect you in the event that you caused an accident of great severity, you need to make sure that you talk to your agent about making that bodily injury liability limit match your underinsured uninsured motorist coverage. In other words, tell your agent that you want to have the same amount of insurance coverage that protects other individuals also protect you in the event you are hit by an uninsured motorist or an underinsured motorist. If you have $500,000 or $1,000,000 of underinsured uninsured motorist coverage, that will provide you with a lot more protection than is normally sold by insurance agents and you will find out that it is relatively cheap to have these large policy amounts cover the potential accidents you may encounter with your motorcycle.
The next most important insurance coverage that you need to be concerned about when riding your motorcycle is the no fault insurance coverage, which is not mandatory in Kansas for motorcyclists even though it is mandatory for other motor vehicles or automobiles. The law in the state of Kansas does not require that you have this no fault benefit that pays medical bills, even if it is your own fault, when riding a motorcycle. I strongly recommend that you select this particular type of coverage because you never know on a motorcycle whether or not you are going to be involved in an accident that was your fault, if the road conditions cause an accident or other conditions lead to your motor vehicle accident and injury. No fault insurance benefits provide medical coverage and lost wages, among other things, in the event that you are involved in an accident, no matter who was at fault for causing the accident. You should tell your agent that you want as much no fault insurance coverage on your motorcycle as you can afford. Many motorcycle accidents result in the motorcycle driver or passenger suffering severe head and bodily injuries because of the fact that they are so unprotected. It can be very expensive to treat. Plenty of no fault insurance coverage protects you in the event that you are seriously injured in a motorcycle accident, no matter whose fault it was, and will pay lost wages and medical bills, amongst other things, to protect you from the serious, sometimes life-altering events.
Riding a motorcycle is more dangerous, by and large, than driving a vehicle. Nevertheless, if you are an experienced motorcyclist and are wary of all of the other drivers on the road, you should be able to avoid serious personal injury. Nevertheless, having adequate motorcycle insurance coverage is important even for the safest of motorcycle drivers because you cannot control what that other driver sees or does on the road, and even if you are doing everything in your power to avoid an accident, many individuals end up seriously injured by those who don't see the motorcycle on the road. If you are not adequately insured, your assets may be taken, your life may be changed or you are risking you and your family's financial well being and medical peace of mind. The best piece of advice that you can take from this Special Report is that your motorcycle insurance should be the last place you would want to scrimp on uninsured underinsured coverage and no fault medical and lost wage benefit. Ask your agent to price out the highest policy limits for all of these difference coverages. Our law firm, attorneys and lawyers handle cases throughout Kansas including, but not limited to: Hutchinson, Wellington, Winfield, El Dorado, Augusta, McPherson, Great Bend, Salina, Derby.
