THREE EASY SOURCES YOU MUST KNOW
TO DETERMINE IF YOUR ATTORNEY IS THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU.
Having the right attorney for your case is critical to having a successful outcome and recovering what you can best expect. Many people don't realize that their attorney only occasionally handles their type of case or that their attorney is not well respected by the legal community. Here are four easy tips you can use to see if the attorney you have, or are about to hire, is really the attorney for YOU.
1. BEFORE YOU HIRE AN ATTORNEY, OR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER, YOU SHOULD GO TO THE WEB SITE FOR THE ETHICS ADMINISTRATOR AND CHECK OUT PRIOR PROBLEMS YOUR ATTORNEY HAS HAD.
The ethics administrator's office is the branch of the government responsible for keeping tabs on and disciplining lawyers who have done their clients wrong. If you call Stan Hazlett at 1-785-296-2486 you should be able to find out if your lawyer has been suspended or disciplined and the nature of the problem your lawyer has had or is having. You could also get on the internet and locate information from the Disciplinary Administrator's office at www.kscourts.org /attydisc/ and locate decisions and opinions involving your attorney. You probably don't want an attorney that has problems stealing or communicating with clients. You should also check out the attorney's staff to make sure the attorney isn't using a disbarred attorney to handle important legal aspects of your case.
2. YOU SHOULD GO TO YOUR ATTORNEY'S WEB SITE OR BLOG AND SEE IF THEY WRITE ABOUT AND HAVE THE EXPERTISE NECESSARY FOR YOUR TYPE OF CASE.
An attorney should have a web site with useful information about your type of case that will allow you to determine if they seem to know what they are talking about. If an attorney doesn't have a web site or blog about your type of case, ask that attorney for references to things he has published or written about in the past. An attorney that doesn't write about your type of case and solutions to your type of problems may not be the best attorney for you.
3. YOU SHOULD CONTACT AT LEAST ONE OTHER ATTORNEY YOU KNOW IN THE COMMUNITY, OR THAT YOU KNOW HANDLES YOUR TYPE OF CASE, AND ASK THEM IF THE ATTORNEY YOU HAVE HIRED OR ARE THINKING OF HIRING IS QUALIFIED TO HANDLE YOUR TYPE OF CASE.
Most attorneys who handle a particular type of case know all of the other attorneys that handle the same types of matters and will truthfully tell you whether or not the attorney you are handling has a little or a lot of experience in your type of case. Don't let the second attorney talk you out of the first if you like the first attorney and they are experienced. Some attorneys will tell the truth about your attorney and then try to convince you that they are better. Avoid this type of attorney and seek references from a third attorney, if necessary.
